Thermolock compared with conventional plaster and insulation boards
Many owners ask how an insulation plaster differs from ordinary plaster, or from boards fixed to the wall. This is a fair comparison of what changes, using the manufacturer's information.
Layers and work on site
With conventional plaster you plaster the wall, then add insulation separately if you want it. Thermolock is designed so the plaster layer itself insulates, which the manufacturer describes as fewer separate layers and a shorter sequence of work. Boards add another fixing step and the joints between them need care.
Weight
The manufacturer gives a density of 200 to 600 kg/m³ depending on the product and describes it as about 5 to 6 times lighter than conventional plaster. Less weight on the structure is useful for terraces and upper floors.
Fire behaviour
The manufacturer classifies Thermolock as A1 non-combustible, and its catalog lists resistance up to 1000 °C. Polystyrene boards are plastic-based, so their fire behaviour is a point to check carefully for any board you consider. Ask for the fire test documents either way.
Breathability
The manufacturer states that Thermolock is breathable, meaning the wall can release moisture vapour. Systems that seal the wall completely can trap moisture behind them if the wall is damp, so ask how any system you consider handles it.
When it is not the answer
No single product fixes everything. A wall with active leaks needs the leak repaired first. A new building may benefit from insulation designed into the structure. We will tell you if another option suits your case better.

Common questions
Is Thermolock lighter than ordinary plaster?
According to the manufacturer, yes: about 5 to 6 times lighter, with a density of 200 to 600 kg/m³ depending on the product.
Does it need a separate insulation board?
The manufacturer designs it so the plaster layer provides the insulation. Ask us what suits your wall.
